Born in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, Boris Kochanowsky (1905-1992) grew up as the youngest son of a
successful industrial tycoon. With the coming of the Russian Revolution, his family lost everything,
and he was thrust into a world of poverty and oppression. Determined to leave Russia, he made his
way to Germany at the age of sixteen, where he studied at the Freiberg School of Mines. After
graduation he held various posts, including advisor to the chief minister of mines under Hitler.
Suddenly condemned as a Jew, he spent months trying to escape Germany, ultimately crossing the
notorious Siegfried line. After almost five years on the run, he reached Switzerland in late 1943 with
the help of the French Resistance. Kochanowsky’s later career took him to Argentina, and finally in
1953, to the United States, where he was appointed professor of mining at the Pennsylvania State
University. While at Penn State and after retirement, he continued to build a reputation as a blasting
and open-pit extraction expert, traveling widely as a consultant to many major mining operations
throughout the world.
Vera Kochanowsky, daughter of the author, is a specialist in early music. She received a DMA from
Stanford University and completed degrees at both the Oberlin and New England Conservatories.
She has been active in the DC area as a harpsichordist soloist, chamber musician, private teacher,
and choral director since her arrival in the DC area in 1990. She also founded two early music vocal
ensembles and led them for 25 years, retiring in 2023. Her two published books focus on the lives of
her parents. Her father’s memoir (Lenin, Hitler and Me) was released in 2016. During the COVID
pandemic she translated all her parents’ wartime correspondence and published it in a volume
entitled Anna and Boris: The Love Letters (1944-1946) in 2022. She continues to teach privately,
present harpsichord recitals, and lecture about her parents. Her latest writing project is a book of
poetry
